About Sonja Birkel:

Hello,

Let me introduce myself:
I am 57 years old and just retired in November 2020. I have been married to Dave for 22 years, been together for 27. He is U.S. citizen, I am German with resident status in the U.S. (Green Card). We have 3 wonderful daughters, 21, 24 and 26 years old. Our middle daughter and her boyfriend, a professional bicycle rider, just relocated to Mallorca (Spain) in January. My oldest daughter is a realtor here in the U.S., and my youngest is going to school.
We have two dogs, an 8 year old lab, Maya, and a 5 year old Rottie/Shepherd mix, plus an 11 year old domestic longhair all black cat, Onyx. I managed and district managed a holistic pet supply shop with focus on nutrition and the significant impact food can have on the health of a pet. So we wouldn't shy away from pet sitting either, as long as it would still grant us some time to explore the environment at least on daytrips.
We both have a clean background check and driving record.
My husband and I both worked very hard all of our lives, so we finally get to enjoy the fruit of our labor. Dave is 67, so he has reached his retirement age, and I am lucky enough to hop on board early. We have two duplexes of which we use one unit to live in ourselves, and the other three units are rented out to take care of our mortgage payments. We are lucky that we have paid off everything else, even the cars. We are currently working on some TLC for the latest duplex we bought, but we also realize that we are too young to do "nothing". The plan was to retire in Panama in the Boquete area because cost of living is that much more affordable than in the States. We took a relocation tour for Panama in February and basically liked it there, but to me it feels a little bit too quiet. So I suggested that we check out Mexico. We just spent a week in Cancun to celebrate Dave's retirement and figured that  it might be too hot there for us to live there permanently. The next stop is Mexico's west coast, thinking Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Todos Los Santos.... And then I thought, why not see more options and "test live" there before making a permanent decision. So now we are open to checking out any places in the world, and what better way to do that then house sitting. We can get real life experience including weather, quality of live, etc, all important things to know before making a decision. What helps is that we are very flexible and open to new adventures.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to ask any questions. We are looking forward to getting to know new areas, making new friends and possibly finding our new forever area.
